Our buying tip: If you play club competitions, check that any slope feature can be disabled and that your competition permits distance-measuring devices. Also compare warranty, shipping, returns and the final checkout price.

How to choose a rangefinder

1. Laser or GPS?

A laser rangefinder measures distance to a target you aim at, such as a flag or bunker edge. A GPS watch or handheld typically shows front, middle and back of green distances without needing to sight a target. This guide focuses on laser models.

2. Check slope controls

Slope-adjusted distances can be useful in practice, but using elevation information during a competition is generally restricted. If competition golf matters to you, verify the model's slope-off functionality and the event's local rules.

3. Prioritise readability and flag lock

Look for clear optics, a comfortable grip and a display you can read in changing light. Pin-lock vibration may be helpful, but manufacturer claims are not a substitute for trying a unit.

4. Check Australian support

Compare warranty terms, seller reputation, return policies and delivery costs. Marketplace products may have different support arrangements from dedicated golf stores.

5. Don't overpay for range

Maximum advertised distance is less important than reliable readings to golf targets. Decide which features you will actually use before paying extra.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a useful golf rangefinder under A$200?

Yes. Several Australian retailer listings were below A$200 when checked, including the Optima Eagle X and Sureshot PINLOC 6000iPM. Compare features and seller support rather than relying on price alone.

Is slope allowed in competitions?

Distance-only measurement is generally permitted under the Rules of Golf, subject to local rules. Measuring or using elevation changes for playing decisions is restricted. Confirm the rules for your event.

Are these affiliate links?
